Photography is a casual part of everyday life for most, but Jared “Bobi” Knox, senior at the University of Iowa, knows how a passion for photography can turn it into something really special.

Knox says he always has a camera with him to capture the next great memory or capture the latest best shot.

The photography student has been taking pictures for five years and specializes in color, black and white images and various types of film cameras.

Knox said he first became attracted to photography in high school when he became friends with his art teacher. At the time he wanted to study nutritional science, but interest did not last.

As a first grader, Knox majored in cinema and then switched to photography as a major.

“I really fell in love with stills and just the power and story they can convey, and I think I realized that in my sophomore year of college,” Knox said.

Knox’s commitment to photography doesn’t limit him to one artistic path. His interests extend to drawing and video work, especially short films. Knox is also taking some graphic design classes, he said.

“I didn’t need a big production studio, or I didn’t have to move anywhere or have anything in particular. All I needed was my camera and I could have an honest artistic voice, ”said Knox. “I think once I understood that, I really got into photography.”

He said he compares photography to filming and focuses on what he thinks makes a good photo at the moment. Instead, he takes pictures based on the color scheme and lighting.

Knox’s bedroom is covered in photographs. Some are his own, but many are from other photographs and designs that inspire his own work. Knox said that some of the things he finds particularly inspiring in his work are fashion and music.

The layout and design of I would Magazine and Uniqlo are two of the most popular Knox inspirations when it comes to fashion magazine design.

As a senior, Knox will soon graduate and enter professional life. He said he will need a lot of experience for the kind of careers that interest him most, so he is aiming for 15 years and now focused on how he will get there.

Eventually, Knox said he was interested in working on producing cartoons and possibly working with the writers to create the big picture. Knox would officially be editor-in-chief or art director.

Knox said his video work and photography work are similar in that they both strive to portray people for who they are as people – not just for who they are when the camera is pointed at them.

“I would say my work is personal – it represents both the way I see a person and an issue of any kind,” said Knox. “But it is also something like a documentary in which subjects exist in a space that they occupy.”
