Robbery accused found hanged in Ambala prison


A week after being arrested for robbing a car in Ambala after shooting at a man and his son, a 42-year-old man from Patiala district was found hanged in Ambala central prison on Friday, the authorities said police with.

The defendant, who turned to gunpoint robbery after his photography business failed amid the pandemic, was arrested in his hometown on July 7 with the robbed car and a gun he had used to shoot victims on July 3.

The victims, Gulshan Kumar, a BJP leader and scrap dealer, and his son Paras Bhatia suffered gunshot wounds in the thigh in the incident.

After three days of police pre-trial detention, the accused was taken to prison on July 11, said inspector Gaurav Punia, the police department in charge of Baldev Nagar Police Station.

“On Friday the prison administration informed us about his suicide. He was found hanging from a prison door and his feet were bound. An autopsy was performed at the district hospital and the body was handed over to the family,” the inspector said.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s family claimed they met him on Thursday and that he was in good spirits.

But Inspector Punia said no written complaint had been made in this regard.

Superintendent of Police Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said: “Once the autopsy report is received, an inquest will be held to investigate the case.”

Before the car robbery in Ambala, the defendant also allegedly robbed a Honda Dio scooter at gunpoint from a 14-year-old girl on Airport Road in Mohali on June 12. He had abandoned a Honda Activa while escaping, which was found robbed by Dera Bassi on June 3.
