There are a number of volunteer opportunities in Alexandria this summer.

“We need hundreds of people a week,” Marion Brunken, Executive Director of Volunteer Alexandria, told ALXnow. “Today there are more people in need than ever.”

Here is the list of new and upcoming opportunities from Volunteer Alexandria.

  • Help provide meals for children – “Alexandria City Public School (ACPS) offers all enrolled ACPS students two days of breakfast and lunch with a free snack package on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Friday distribution includes one meal (s) for Saturday. Volunteers meet at different schools to help with packing boxes and loading buses with packaged meals. Volunteers then take the bus to distribute the meals while they are on-site at some of the ACPS mobile pop-up locations. Click on each location to log in: Francis C.   • Alexandria Dept. of Community and Human Services Voluntary Guardian – “Looking for people who have the welfare of a
    Alexandrian who is unable to work and lives in an assisted living facility or a care facility. Voluntary guardians are appointed by the court to make decisions for elderly Alexandria residents who have lost the ability to understand the consequences of their decisions. The volunteer visits the resident monthly and responds as much as possible to the wishes of the person. To show interest, click HERE. “
  • Alexandria Families for Safer Streets Executive Assistant to the Board of Directors – “The agency is looking for an executive assistant to help us coordinate a variety of tasks needed to keep us on track and move forward. Someone with skills as an office manager would be an ideal candidate. To learn more click HERE.
  • ALIVE! – “Volunteers are needed to help with several programs related to their nutrition program, ALIVE! House and the Alexandria Eviction Prevention Partnership Program will be handing out groceries at mobile pop-ups and truck to trunk events, etc. HERE to find out about every opportunity and to register. “
  • The Alzheimer’s Association and the Walk to End Alzheimer –Saturday, September 25th (National Harbor) and Saturday, October 9th, 2021 at the National Mall, Washington, DC. On the day of the events, volunteers are needed to help with the construction, the placement of signs, information services, the distribution of flower pledges, cheerleaders and track monitors.   • Create COVID-19 Care Packages with the Salvation Army – “We collect items for seniors and vulnerable groups. You can help by creating care packages from the security of your own home and securely dropping items off at our locations. To show interest, click HERE.
  • Long-term employees in customer reception – “Bring financial and logistical assistance to those who need Virginia State ID to access housing, food aid, jobs, and more. While we help our customers get IDs, we also register them to vote and help others regain their voting rights. To sign in, click here.
  • Event photographer on demand – “Use your photography skills to document the incredible work of our volunteers. Flexible schedule. Perfect for a
    A student looking to build their portfolio or a seasoned photographer looking for a service opportunity. Must provide digital photographs (and all rights to photographs) to @VolunteerAlex for use in digital and print promotions. The person must provide their own camera equipment and transportation.   • World Culture Food Festival on Saturday July 31st – “We are looking for volunteers for the Around The World Cultural Food Festival. The shifts are in 4-hour and 8-hour segments. These postponements can take place before, during or after the festival. Each volunteer receives meal cards. Upon request, students can also receive service hours for volunteer work in the festival.   • Teacher at Friends of Guest House – “Dedicated volunteers are needed to teach women various subjects and skills. The ideal volunteer will be patient and interested in these women’s success as they grow their knowledge.   • Street festival of the friendship fire brigade – “Volunteers are needed on August 7th between 8:00 am and 2:30 pm to help set up, count and greet visitors, monitor tables and interact with guests.
