Abstract artist creates a business and makes unique backdrops

Merced, CA – If you walk into Jessica Raye Dekkers studio, you’ll notice the splotches of paint on the driveway and trash cans nearby. “Before we renovated our garage, I painted in the driveway and always seemed to paint on Tuesdays, that was garbage day,” Dekker explains. “So I painted when the garbage was full. When people see my studio, I hope they know that I didn’t have that all along and that I literally painted with trash and toddlers. “

Dekker owns the JRD Art Shop, where she makes unique backdrops and styling mats for photographers and other creatives. Each piece is hand-painted by her. “I started selling my abstract works of art in 2016. Then a local photographer came up to me and asked if I could do something like this, but on a larger scale, like 2.40 x 3.50 m. I thought, yes, I could do that! “

Over the course of a month, Dekker paints mats and backgrounds in different sizes and colors and takes surveys on her Instagram page to measure interest. Then she offers her collection for sale once a month on her website JRDartshop.com. Her creations have quickly become some of the most sought-after backdrops and accessories in the photography industry. For those who go straight to the big stores to get their backdrops, Dekker says, “There’s a depth and dimension to something that’s original that you just can’t get when you print it. There are textures and layers that go behind a camera comes to life and you just can’t reproduce that. ”

Although Dekker’s art is her passion, she hopes that as a mom who also has time for her business, she will inspire other women to find time for themselves to do something they love. “I fought against the feelings, is that selfish of me? Having a babysitter so I can have time to paint and do something I love? It’s not selfish, it’s about myself. If I don’t put myself first, How do I do with my family, what do I offer my family as a mother, as a wife? It is very important for me to appear as the mother I want to be and the wife I want to be. “

But above all, she wants her art to be a means of connection. “It’s so much more than art. It’s so much more than a business. It is able to really get in touch with people. ”
